COVID-19 Pandemic Creates Catch-22 for Philadelphia Start-Up

Biomeme, Inc., a biotechnology start-up, developed and manufactured a COVID-19 Real-Time RT-PCR test in February 2020, just a month before COVID-19 lockdowns began in the United States. The company still wasn’t sure what to expect from the then novel coronavirus, but they knew they wanted to be prepared.

Once it became clear that COVID-19 would affect the entire country and lockdown in Philadelphia was enforced, the question then became, how do we stay open to manufacture SARS-CoV-2 tests while keeping our team safe from the spread of COVID-19?

One Health Labs to the Rescue

One Health Labs, a subsidiary of Biomeme, Inc., was ready to jump in! One Health Labs established weekly employee screening for the entire Biomeme team. All employees were required to get tested at least three times per week as soon as they arrived at the office. One Health Labs’ ability to return results in as few as two hours ensured that any employees with a positive test could quickly be sent home and their workspace cleaned.

We quickly built up our systems to work with this amount of testing. At the peak of the pandemic, over 100 Biomeme employees were required to get tested 5x a week. One Health Labs received Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA for our SARS-CoV-2 Real-Time RT-PCR test which allowed our team to test the entire Biomeme team to avoid rapid spread of COVID-19 while working together to manufacture SARS-CoV-2 tests to ensure the supply of COVID-19 tests the United States, Canada, South Africa, Singapore, and more.

One Health Labs’ Quick, Reliable Testing Enables Biomeme to Scale

Biomeme’s success heavily depended on reliable, fast COVID-19 screening from One Health Labs. With the help of One Health Labs’ workplace screening, Biomeme scaled the business by 200% between 2020 and 2022. Biomeme attributes the bulk of this growth to One Health Labs, the company could not have scaled quickly without the ability to catch all positive COVID-19 cases early before the virus could spread.

Today, Biomeme still works with One Health Labs for COVID-19 screening, however, the team’s low positivity rate has enabled the company to cut back from testing five days per week, down to one day per week!
